Enjoy a weekend
in the country experiencing modern farm life and the rich rural
history of Miami County. Twice each year, volunteers plan a tour
of local farm sites that open to the public with fun and educational
activities for the whole family. Celebrate the diversity and bounty
of the fresh farm products you will find on the back roads of Miami
County.
These are self-guided tours allowing families to visit as many or
as few of the tour stops as they like, while traveling in the comfort
of their own vehicle.
This event is kid friendly! However, we ask that guardians maintain
control of their children at all times and promote respect for property,
plants and animals while visiting the stops.
Plans are underway for the 2008 tours.
Miami
County Farm Tour May 10-11, 2008
A new twist
has been added to the annual Miami County Farm Tour slated for May
10-11.
In addition
to the eight stops open to visitors Saturday, May 10 from 8:30 am
to 4 pm and Sunday, May 11 from 10 am to 4 pm, area chefs will be
providing samples of the products.
Families are
encouraged to come taste the freshness at the Louisburg Cider Mill,
14730 W. K-68 Highway, Saturday, May 10, and Sunday, May 11 from
11 am to 2 pm.
Slowfood Kansas
City will have guest chefs from Jasper's, Timbercreek, Beethoven's,
Molly's Table Catering and Casa Somerset Catering providing cooking
demonstrations using the products produced by farm tour participants.
Samples will be available. Slowfood is an international organization
that supports small growers and farmers.
Jasper Mirabile
of Jasper's restaurant will broadcast his 710AM radio show live
from the Louisburg Cider Mill from 11 a.m. until noon Saturday,
May 10.
The weekend
offers families an opportunity to spend time outdoors enjoying the
more rural aspects of Miami County.
Each site offers
activities for the whole family. Animals range from emus and alpacas
to Herford cattle. Products include pecans, fresh vegetables, honey,
wine and blackberries.
This self-guided
tour celebrates the County’s diversity and highlights local
farm products found on the back roads of Miami County. Watch for
directional signs the day of the tour and visit as many of the tour
stops as you like. Parking areas will be designated at each stop.
Although this
event is kid friendly, each site is a working farm. Guardians are
asked to encourage their children to respect the farm’s operations,
plants and animals.
Stops include:
Stop # 1:
4 D Acres: 13096 W 287th Street, Louisburg, 913-271-1832
“Adding
the chefs this year is a great way to encourage families to try
locally-grown products,” said Mike Martin, farm tour chairman.
“We are lucky to have chefs of such high quality willing to
serve our visitors some great products.”
Mirabile was
named executive chef of Kansas City's premiere dining room in May
of 1984 at the young age of 22. His family history reflects a love
for fine food and elegance. His grandmother helped his father launch
Jasper's back in 1954, now almost 45 years later, Mirabile has taken
over reins of the 2000+ square foot kitchen, as he oversees the
staff of 15 assistants.
Since 1990,
Mirabile has become a naturally acclaimed chef in his own rite.
He has made guest chef appearances at The James Beard House in L.A.,
New York, Milan, and Paris. He has been written about by every major
newspaper and magazine including Laudes by USA Today, New York Times,
Midwest Living, and Italy's Cucina.
