Miami County Farm Tour
Featuring scenic and unusual locations!
Saturday, May 9, 2009 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sunday, May 10, 2009 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Enjoy a day trip to the country featuring clean air and a rural heritage.

A free self-guided tour, you can visit as many tour stops as you like while traveling in the comfort of your own vehicle. We ask that guardians supervise all children and promote respect for property, plants and animals while visiting the stops. Please leave your pets at home – but remember to bring your camera!

Stop # 1: 4 D Acres
Mike and Dee Martin, 13096 W 287th Street, Louisburg
Enjoy an entertaining and educational trip to 4 D Acres. Learn about this prehistoric animal and what it takes to raise the emu, a modern day dinosaur. Hear the relaxing sounds of the adult emu and the whistling sounds of the baby chicks. Meet Blue, our mascot, and Barney, our pet. A guard llama, Sambo, protects the chicks. Emu oil products and the low fat, heart healthy emu meat will be available for purchase, so bring your cooler.

Stop # 2: Prothe's Pecans
Leland and Slina Prothe, 33850 Victory Rd, Paola
You are welcome to sample pecans, tour the orchard and check out equipment for harvesting to shelling pecans on this family farm dating back to 1879. Pecan halves, cracked pecans, black walnut pieces and container grown pecan trees will be for sale. Pecans are available all year. Thanks for stopping in!

Stop # 3: Pickings & Pumpkins

Our farm is dedicated to growing fresh, healthy herbs, vegetables and fruits. Visit the orchard, herb garden, growing fields, green house and high-tunnel. The high-tunnel will be in full production. We raise our own vegetable, flower and herb plants, which will be for sale. Picnic tables are available.

Stop # 4: Alpacas 'R Diamonds

Stop # 5: Connie's Potting Shed

Pamper Mother with a unique gift such as a fresh flower arrangement, dried flower wreath, arrangement, handcrafted soap, lotion bar or botanical candle produced on site. Limited selections of bedding plants and perennials will also be available. Visit our high tunnel to see Asiatic lilies in production or explore our theme gardens for perennial/woody shrub ideas. Also at this stop: Ask a Master Gardener; K-State Research and Extension, Miami County Master Gardeners will be available to answer your questions related to horticulture. Stop # 6: Somerset Ridge Vineyard & Winery

Visit a working vineyard and winery where award winning wines are produced from Kansas-grown grapes. Learn about the rich history of grape growing and wine making in Kansas. Tour the vineyard, then sample some of our hand-crafted wines.

Stop # 7: Cy and Dee's Blackberries

We welcome you to come and see our 850 blackberry plants and learn more about them. A drip line irrigation system was installed in 2006 to provide even watering and produce better berries. Blackberries ripen mid-July through August. We will have tomatoes and sweet corn in season.

Small family operation of polled Hereford cattle. We sell bulls, heifers and meat calves. We feed only real feed products. We do not use growth hormones. We sell ground beef and steak products on site.

Stop # 9: Terabithia Dairy Goats

Goat milk - a most healthy choice! Come sample our milk, cheese and ice cream. Recipes available. "Oberhasli" dairy goats are hand milked twice daily and all babies are bottle fed. Cheesemaking classes by appointment during the summer. Personal containers needed for any milk purchased.

Stop # 10: Cedar Ridge Farm Boers

Visit our small Boer goat breeding operation, raising 4-H and FFA show prospects, market goats and pet goats. Goats can be a rewarding hobby or small business. Goats require smaller acreages and less money to feed and maintain in comparison to other livestock. We look forward to your visit.

Slow Food Kansas City will have guest chefs from Timbercreek, Beethoven's and Casa Somerset Catering providing cooking demonstrations using the products produced by farm tour participants. Samples will be available.

Slow Food is an international organization that supports small growers and farmers. We believe in local products and hope to support the Miami County growers and farmers.
