Getting Started

Starting a new business venture can be an exciting, yet stressful, time. There are so many variables involved in making a business successful, evaluating each step of the process is important.

Steps to Success is drafted by the Kansas Department of Commerce and provides a detailed list of important factors to consider and resources for your research. While doing your homework, reach out to as many resources as possible to gather input on your vision. However, do not fail to overlook the need for professional advice. Missing a step early in the process can create numerous headaches down the road while overlooking critical steps can lead to failure.

Some suggested steps:

  • Research and try to gain experience in the type of business you are interested in pursuing. (resource: industry partners)
  • Assess your strengths and weaknesses. (resources: Miami County Economic Development, Kansas Small Business Development Center and SCORE)
  • Obtain business management training. (resources: Fort Scott Community College, Miami County Economic Development and Kansas Small Business Development Center)
  • Research needed licenses and permits. (resources: Miami County Planning, Miami County Economic Development, local community planning office, First Stop Clearinghouse, Kansas Secretary of State, Kansas Department of Revenue and Kansas Small Business Development Center)
  • Determine optimal legal structure. (resources: professional attorney, professional accountant, Small Business Administration)

Many of the resources listed above are available at little or no cost and were created to help you succeed. Remember, you don’t have to do this alone, be wise and use the resources and the experience available to you.
