Noxious Weeds

Director: Maurice Ball

The first Kansas Weed Law was passed in 1937 by the Legislature primarily because of field bindweed. This noxious weed was spreading rapidly in Kansas and was causing a serious economic loss to the farmers of Kansas. Eleven other weeds have been added to the noxious weed list since that time. As with field bindweed, the other eleven weeds can cause serious economic losses for farmers. The Kansas State Legislature has declared the following weeds as noxious weeds in all counties of Kansas.

There are also two weeds that any county may declare as noxious. They are:

  • Multiflora Rose
  • Bull Thistle

The weeds that are linked in bold print and are underlined are the noxious weeds that pose a problem to landowners in Miami County. Click on the weed of your choice for more detailed information.

Kansas Law requires all persons and organizations to control the spread of and to eradicate all noxious weeds on land owned by them. It is also required that any livestock grain or hay containing noxious weed seed shall not be sold, offered for sale, bartered or given away except to processors or where the grain or hay will be consumed on the same farm where grown.

Cost-Share Certificate Program

Miami County provides cost-share certificates for private landowners to purchase chemicals approved for noxious weed control at a discount from retail price. Cost-share certificates can be mailed to any Miami County landowner who wishes to use herbicide control methods for noxious weed control. Cost-share certificates can also be picked up from our office at 201 South Pearl, Suite 201, Paola, Kansas. A list of current retailers accepting cost-share certificates can be obtained from our office.
