Moving In-State

A new Kansas resident must register vehicles within 90 days of establishing residency. Examples of residency: Own, Lease, or rent a place of domicile for more than 90 days; or have a place of domicile and accept employment.

Individual(s) must apply for registration in person. In addition, if the names of the owners on the title are connected by “and”, then both parties must be present, unless, Power of Attorney has been given.

Necessary to register vehicle:

  • Current out-of-state title. If coming from a “title-holding” state, lienholder must fax a copy of the front and back of the title to the Motor Vehicle Office.
  • MVE-1 inspection by the Kansas Highway Patrol.
  • Proof of Insurance, effective January 1, 2000 there are new insurance requirements.

New Vehicle Purchase

Necessary for registration/licensing:

  • Properly assigned Manufacture Statement of Origin.
  • If purchased from a Kansas dealer, a sales tax receipt is required. If purchased from an individual or an out-of-state dealer, a bill of sale is necessary.
  • Proof of Insurance, effective January 1, 2000 there are new insurance requirements.

Used Vehicle Purchase

Necessary for registration/licensing:

  • Properly assigned title
  • If purchased from a Kansas dealer, a sales tax receipt is required. If purchased from an individual or an out-of-state dealer, a bill of sale is necessary.
  • Odometer Disclosure Statement
  • MVE-1 inspection by the Kansas Highway Patrol, if out-of-state title
  • All liens must be released.
  • Proof of Insurance, effective January 1, 2000 there are new insurance requirements.

New Vehicle Transfer

Plate transfer is applicable if the disposed/sold vehicle is replaced by another motor vehicle.

Necessary for registration/licensing:

  • Current registration from the disposed vehicle.
  • Name of buyer of disposed vehicle.
  • Assignment of name on new title must match name on disposed vehicle registration.
  • Properly assigned Manufacture Statement of Origin.
  • If purchased from a Kansas dealer, a sales tax receipt is required. If purchased from an individual or an out-of-state dealer, a bill of sale is necessary.

If there is a place for the purchase price on the back of the title, then you do not need the Odometer Disclosure Statement or the bill of sale.

Renewals

The following can be mailed or hand carried to the Motor Vehicle Office. If mailing, include $.50 per tag renewal. One check is acceptable for payment.

  • Renewal notice from the State of Kansas, bearing a registered owner’s signature
  • Proof of Insurance New insurance requirements effective January 1, 2000.

If renewing by mail a renewal decal will be mailed back from the registrar. This decal must be placed over the previous renewal year on the plate. Keep the registration paper and proof of insurance in vehicle.

Kansas Online Tax Payments

Other

  • College, antique, disabled, combat wounded, veterans, and personalized plates.
  • Handicap placards.
  • Temporary tags (30 days).
  • Tag refunds.

Renewal Schedule

The State will issue renewal applications approximately forty-five days prior to renewal date.

Heavy trucks and trailers – January 1 through February 28.
