Higher
educational resources in Miami County are accessible and outstanding.
In August 2004 Fort Scott Community College expanded its presence
in Miami County in the establishment of the FSCC
- Miami County Campus. The Technology Institute at Pittsburg
State University provides a superior education program. Additionally,
the close proximity to Johnson
County Community College (JCCC) is also a great benefit to the
area. In all, there are over twenty (20) multi-purpose colleges and
universities within thirty (30) minutes of Miami County. |
Miami
County's agricultural economic base continues to be significant.
A meaningful gain in population has been demonstrated by the recent
construction of numerous higher priced housing units. Many factors
have contributed to this pattern of growth, including enthusiastic
local support and the strong appeal for urbanites that increasingly
seek the advantages of a rural lifestyle.
The
Miami County Airport, a general aviation facility, located halfway
between Paola and Osawatomie continues to upgrade the facility,
increasing the value of its contribution to the county's growth
and development opportunities. Recent upgrades include the construction
of Runway 4-22, and installation of MIRL, MITL, REILS, and PAPIS.
Many of the
sites and accompanying history reflect specifically on the issues
of slavery and the Civil War, as well as the legacy of the early
Indians. John Brown's Lookout near the Miami
County Airport still stands at the hilltop where John Brown
directed the escape of slaves by his Underground Railroad. Hillsdale
Lake, located in the northern portion of the county, is one of the
premier fishing lakes in Kansas. It provides a unique opportunity
to discover nature. Hunters will find a variety of game on Hillsdale's
8,000 acres of land. For the fisherman, Hillsdale is known as one
of the top Largemouth Bass lakes in the state and has fifty-one
acres of shoreline.
Miami County offers the
balance of small town living with big city conveniences. |
