| The
Miami County Sheriff's Office works closely with community leaders
and citizens to reduce
crime and to protect the well-being of our citizens. We believe
that great strides can be made in reducing crime by educating the
public, particularly our children. To this end, we have implemented
many educational community programs - drawing law enforcement and
the public closer together.
The following
are some of the many community programs provided by the Miami County
Sheriff's Office:
Cops
for Tots
The Cops for Tops program was organized as a memorial to the late
Sheriff Ken Davis, who had a special place in his heart for helping
children.
The Angel
Tree allows citizens to donate gifts such as clothing and
toys to children in need. The Sheriff's Office and local Police,
Fire, EMS, City & County Employees, and Volunteers come together
to deliver the gifts to the children at Christmas.
The
Cops for Tots Auction, which started in 1999,
helps to raise money for families in need during emergencies such
as severe weather, total loss due to fire, etc.
Kids
& Cops Fishing
The Kids and Cops Fishing program is another wonderful means of
promoting trust between kids and local law enforcement. The annual
Fishing Tournament is held at Lake Miola in Paola, Kansas. A
full day of food, fishing, and prizes, the tournament gives kids
a chance to build relationship with law enforcement in a relaxed,
fun environment.
Bears
On Patrol
This program is sponsored by local organizations and citizens who
donate stuffed teddy bears to the Miami County Sheriff's Office.
Teddy bears are kept in each Deputy's patrol unit and are used to
comfort and calm children during accidents, fires, domestic violence
cases and other crises.
Explorer
Post #2502
The Explorer Program, an affiliation of the Boy Scouts of America,
consists of individuals ranging from fourteen to twenty-one years
of age. New Explorers
are selected at the start of each school year. Explorers participate
in learning the everyday functions of the Miami County Sheriff's
Office and assist in public relation functions.
Citizens'
Academy
The Citizens' Academy was established in the spring of 2000. The
classes are three hours each, one night a week for nine weeks. If
you are interested in participating in the Citizens' Academy, please
fill out the necessary application.
The program
starts with the history of the Miami County Sheriff's Office and
takes the students through the laws, duties and training pertaining
to the present day Sheriff's Office. Students participate in mock
crime scenes and firearms usage. (Students must be at least twenty-one
years of age, work or reside in Miami County and have no criminal
record. An application process is required.)
Sheriff's
Office Calendar
The Miami County Sheriff's Office, with the support of
local businesses, participates in an annual Calendar Fundraiser
which helps to provide safety literature to families in Miami County.
Calendars are available at the Sheriff's Office and at various community
functions in which the Sheriff's Office participates. |
