Division
Archive records are available between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 4:30
p.m., Monday through Friday. Available reports would include Motor
Vehicle Accident, General Purpose, and Offense Reports.
Jail
Division
The present-day Jail was built in 1967 and included living quarters
for the Sheriff and his family. The living quarters have since been
converted into office space.
There are approximately
1,000 inmates processed through the Jail each year.
Jail visitation
is for immedate family members only. Visitation hours are Sundays:
- 2:00 p.m.
- 2:30 p.m. for female inmates
- 2:30 p.m.
- 4:00 p.m. for male inmates

Communications
Division
The Communications Division handles all incoming 911 calls
in Miami County. Computer-aided dispatching is utilized to dispatch
for three county ambulances, rural fire departments, the Louisburg
Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, and Kansas Wildlife &
Parks.
Investigations
Division
The Investigations Division handles the investigation of crimes
committed against persons and/or property and narcotics crime. Detectives
work with local, state and federal agencies to investigate criminal
activities.
Road
Patrol Division
The Road Patrol Division handles approximately 5,000 calls per year,
serves approximately 3,700 civil process papers, and executes approximately
300 warrants per year. Deputies respond to all incoming 911 calls,
including those dialed in error.
Each Deputy
works four (4) ten-hour shifts on a rotating schedule and is assigned
a "take home" patrol unit, which allows for a quicker
response in emergencies.

are some of the many additional duties assigned to Sheriff's Deputies:
Business
and Residential Checks
Per the request of citizens or business owners, security checks
will be conducted. Deputies check the interior and exterior of the
home or business which includes inspection of door locks, lighting,
alarms, safes, windows, etc.
Residents of
Miami County may also request a Vacation House Check if they plan
to be out of town. These residential checks are conducted daily,
ensuring extra security. (Contact the Crime Prevention Unit for

- Motorist
Assist
Deputies respond to all reports of stranded motorists in the unincorporated
areas of the county, or refer callers to the appropriate Police
Department or the Kansas Highway Patrol.
- Child
Safety Seats
The Miami County Sheriff's Office conducts a number of Child Safety
Seat Clinics each year to ensure that parents are correctly installing
their child's safety seat. Deputies who have been specially trained
as Child Safety Seat Technicians are also available to check a
citizen's car seat by making an appointment for the inspection.
- Operation
Life Saver (Railroad Crossing Safety)
Deputies target drivers who fail to obey railroad signals and
crossing arms to decrease the number of grade crossing collisions.
During these operations, Deputies ride the trains to identify
and cite drivers who have risked their lives and the lives of
their passengers by driving around crossing arms.
- Sobriety
Checkpoints
The Miami County Sheriff's Office routinely conducts Sobriety
Checkpoints throughout the year. Checkpoints are used to detect
and deter impaired drivers and as a means to educate the motoring
public about the dangers of impaired driving and its costs to
society.
- Traffic
Enforcement/Accident Investigation
Deputies conduct random patrols and selective enforcement operations
to target hazardous moving violations, suspended and revoked drivers,
and impaired drivers to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities
on our roadways.
- Technical
Accident Investigations
Identify the underlying causes for collisions which allow the
Sheriff's Office to target enforcement of dangerous driver behaviors
to reduce crashes. They also provide valuable information to the
Department of Transportation in regards to possible engineering-related
causes.
- K-9
Unit
The Miami County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit is utilized in narcotics
detection and in tracking criminals or missing persons.

Reserve Unit
Reserve Deputies assist with the everyday patrol duties. These
non-paid volunteers contribute over 1,000 hours a year. They receive
the same training as a paid Deputy. They are a great asset to
the Miami County Sheriff's Office.
Special
Operations Response Team
The Special Operations Response Team (S.O.R.T.) handles hostile
situations with violent suspects, serves high-risk search warrants,
and handles hostage negotiations.
Emergency
Management Division
- Storm
Spotters
The Storm Spotters are the ground observers of severe weather.
Storm Spotters notify the Communication Division of their findings
who, in turn, notifies the National Weather Service of severe
weather in Miami County. Storm Spotters are volunteers who provide
their own time to ensure the safety of Miami County citizens.
They are an asset and very much appreciated.
- Underwater
Search and Recovery
The Underwater Search and Recovery Unit assists emergency personnel
in underwater recoveries, which include the recovery of persons,
property, and evidence. In addition, the team assists with swift
water and ice rescues, and provides the public with boat safety
instruction. This Unit also consists of volunteers who give freely
of their time to be of help to the citizens of Miami County.
- Local
Emergency Planning Committee
The L.E.P.C. serves
as the coordinator of communications between various emergency
rescue and relief agencies, meeting the needs of citizens should
disaster strike.
